Buyer's Guide: LEGO-Compatible Sets on AliExpress
Everything you need to know before your first (or tenth) alternative brick purchase. We built Alt Brick Deals to make this process easier โ this guide explains the landscape so you can shop with confidence.
Who Makes These Sets?
The alternative brick world isn't one company โ it's an entire ecosystem of manufacturers, each with their own strengths. Here are the names worth knowing:
- Mould King โ If you want the closest experience to LEGO quality, start here. They use premium GoBricks elements (more on that below) and specialize in large, complex builds โ especially Technic vehicles and architecture.
- CaDa โ The engineering enthusiast's brand. Their Technic-style sets often include RC functionality and real mechanical complexity. They've done some interesting licensed collaborations too.
- Reobrix โ Fills niches that other brands don't. Strong in architecture, military history, and themed builds with impressive detail work at reasonable prices.
- JieStar โ A solid choice if you're testing the waters. They cover a wide range of themes at lower price points, so there's less risk on your first purchase.
On Alt Brick Deals, we work to identify which brand made each set whenever possible, so you have more context about what you're buying.
The GoBricks Factor
You'll see "GoBricks" mentioned a lot in this space. GoBricks is a brick element manufacturer โ think of them as the "Intel Inside" of alternative bricks. Sets built with GoBricks elements have noticeably tighter fit, more consistent color matching, and that satisfying click when pieces connect. Mould King uses them in most of their sets, and other brands are increasingly adopting them for premium lines.
Finding a Good Seller
The set you pick matters, but so does who you buy it from. Two sellers can list the exact same Mould King set at very different prices, with very different shipping experiences. A few things to look for:
- Feedback score: Stores focused primarily on building sets should have 97%+ positive feedback. Stores that sell many product types should be at least 95%+.
- Sales volume: A store that has processed thousands of orders has a track record you can rely on. Low-volume stores aren't necessarily bad, but there's less to go on.
- Community reputation: The Reddit community at r/lepin has been buying these sets for years. We incorporate their collective knowledge about sellers directly into our platform, so you can see at a glance which stores have earned trust over time.
Making Sense of Prices
AliExpress shows prices in several ways, and understanding the differences helps you spot genuine value:
- New buyer promotions: If you've never purchased on AliExpress before, you'll often see a lower promotional price. Keep in mind this rate is a one-time offer โ the regular price for returning buyers will be different.
- Crossed-out "original" prices: These reference prices are set by the seller. Rather than comparing a price to its own "was" number, it's more useful to compare the same set across multiple sellers โ which is exactly what our comparison tool does.
- Choice items: AliExpress highlights certain listings with a "Choice" badge, which generally means faster fulfillment and buyer protection. Worth considering, even if it's occasionally a dollar or two more.
- Cost per piece: For apples-to-apples value comparison, divide price by piece count. Under 5ยข per piece is solid value; under 3ยข is a great deal.
Your First Order: What to Expect
Buying building sets internationally is straightforward, but there are a few things that might surprise first-time buyers:
- Delivery timeline: Plan for 2-4 weeks on standard shipping. Some sellers maintain warehouses in the US and Europe for faster delivery โ our tool flags these when we can identify them.
- Packaging: Sets typically arrive in plain packaging without the retail box. This keeps shipping costs down and is standard practice โ the bricks inside are the same quality either way.
- Build instructions: Usually included as a printed booklet, though some brands provide a QR code for a digital download. The major brands (Mould King, CaDa) generally have clear, high-quality instructions.
- Completeness: With established brands, receiving all pieces is the norm. On the rare occasion something is missing, sellers are typically responsive about sending replacements.
- Minifigures: Worth checking specifically โ some set listings include figures while others sell the structure only, with figures available as a separate purchase. We're working on flagging this clearly in our listings.
